Bluetooth Earphones Global Certification Solutions

True wireless (TWS), over-ear and neckband sports earphones — covering the main markets in the USA, EU, Japan, Korea, China and Saudi Arabia

Certification Overview

Bluetooth earphones consist of a Bluetooth SoC, an antenna, a lithium battery, a charging case (on some models), a USB interface and the speakers. Certification work centers on radio, battery safety and the safety rules that apply in each country

Typical Test Items

📡 RF

Transmit power; 20dB bandwidth / 99% occupied bandwidth; spurious emissions, in-band and out-of-band; frequency stability; SAR assessment (USA)

⚡ EMC

Radiated emissions (RE); conducted emissions (CE, in charging mode); electrostatic discharge (ESD); radiated immunity (RS)

🔋 Safety

IEC 62133/UL 1642 lithium battery safety; charging case safety testing; overcharge, over-discharge and short-circuit protection; temperature rise testing

🔊 Sound Pressure / Hearing Safety

EN 50332-1 (maximum sound pressure output of the player) and EN 50332-2 (wide-band characteristic sound pressure of the earphones) — a requirement specific to the EU

FAQ

Do both earbuds and the charging case of a TWS product need certification?
Declarations are usually made at system level, with the charging case and the earbuds treated as a single set. If each earbud has its own wireless function — that is, its own Bluetooth radio — both must be tested. If the charging case only supplies power and has no wireless function, it falls within the safety scope as an accessory and does not require separate RF certification.
Does TWS earphone FCC certification require SAR testing?
It depends on transmit power and how the product is used. TWS earphones are worn close to the ear, so they count as portable devices. Where output power is above the exemption threshold (under 3mW, products can typically be exempted), SAR testing is required. In practice many TWS products qualify for an exemption, but this has to be assessed case by case.
Can earphones skip the EU EN 50332 sound pressure test?
The RED sets out explicit requirements for the sound pressure safety of earphone-type products. The risk of skipping the test: a non-compliance picked up in an EU market surveillance spot check, which can lead to a mandatory recall.
Can using an already-certified Bluetooth module simplify certification?
Yes. Using a Bluetooth module that already holds FCC ID/MIC certification can simplify certification of the whole product, particularly the RF testing. The finished product still needs EMC and safety testing.
