Camera / Security Global Certification Roadmap

IP cameras · security monitoring · smart home cameras · baby monitors · webcams, covering both WiFi 2.4G and 5G bands

Certification Overview

A camera is built from an image sensor, a processor, a WiFi/Bluetooth module, IR LEDs, a power module and an SD card slot, so certification has to cover radio, safety, EMC and cybersecurity all at once

Typical Test Items

📡 Radio Frequency

WiFi 2.4G: transmit power, bandwidth and spurious emissions (Part 15C / EN 300 328); WiFi 5G: DFS and TPC (Part 15E / EN 301 893); antenna gain and radiation pattern

⚡ EMC

Radiated disturbance (the IR LED board adds disturbance of its own), conducted disturbance (network and power ports), electrostatic discharge (outdoor cameras are held to stricter limits), and surge / lightning strike

🔌 Safety

Power adapter safety to IEC 62368-1; dielectric strength, insulation and temperature rise for the complete unit; IP rating testing against water and dust (outdoor cameras typically require IP65+)

🔒 Cybersecurity

UK PSTI Act (in force since April 2024): password security, a vulnerability disclosure mechanism, and a stated software update support period; EU RED cybersecurity requirements (EN 303 645)

Certification Cost Reference by Country

Frequently Asked Questions

My camera has both WiFi 2.4G and 5G — will the certification fee double?
It does not double, but it does rise noticeably. Compared with 2.4G, 5G WiFi testing adds DFS (dynamic frequency selection) and TPC (transmit power control). Dual-band 2.4G+5G certification costs roughly 1.5–1.8 times as much as a single band.
How do certification requirements differ between outdoor and indoor cameras?
Outdoor cameras need IP water and dust testing (typically IP65+), along with stricter ESD and surge requirements, possibly lightning protection, and weatherability requirements for the materials (UV ageing and so on). These are extra test items, so the cost goes up accordingly.
What does the UK PSTI Act require for cameras?
The UK Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure Act, in force since 29 April 2024, requires connected products to provide: ① password security (universal default passwords are not allowed) ② a vulnerability disclosure mechanism ③ a statement of the software update support period. Cameras are a typical connected device and must comply.
Does exporting cameras to the EU require attention to GDPR?
If a camera is sold to end consumers and may collect data (video or audio), the design and documentation should reflect data protection considerations (local storage first, encrypted transmission, and so on). This is largely a design question rather than a certification test item, but the user manual and the compliance statement should address it.
